Calm water

Scenic Float

Sometimes you want the river without the splashes. Your guide rows, you sit back, and the Yellowstone does the rest: about two hours of calm water and big Montana views.

We do the work. You enjoy the view.

On the Scenic Float your guide does all the rowing, so nobody has to paddle. It runs the same stretch of the Yellowstone as our whitewater trips, on a calmer line through it. Most people stay dry, though a splash is always possible.

It suits grandparents, toddlers and anyone who'd rather watch the river than get soaked by it. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, osprey, elk and bison, with 11,000-foot peaks all around.

Can't manage the hill down to the river? Tell us when you book: guests who need it can start from an easier put-in.

How it works

Two easy hours on the Yellowstone

  1. Check in at the shop

Thirty minutes before your float. Park on the street right by the shop.

  2. Life jackets on

A commercially rated life jacket for every guest, little ones included.

  3. Down to the river

A short walk to the boats, or an easier put-in if the hill is hard for someone in your group.

  4. Float and look around

Your guide rows and points out the wildlife and the peaks. Bring a drink or a snack if you like.

Scenic Float or whitewater?

Could your family do the 8-Mile instead?

An honest answer from the owners: in July and August, the Scenic Float and the 8-Mile are almost the same trip. If your kids are about 45 lb and up and nobody minds a splash, most families have more fun on the 8-Mile.

Reviews

Little ones, grandparents and everyone in between

“Did the 2 hour scenic float on the Yellowstone with flying pig! Libby is an excellent guide and we had an amazing day with our 4 and 7 year olds. Highly recommend!”

Guest review · Scenic Float, kids 4 and 7

“This was my first ever rafting trip. They help you feel very comfortable, and ensure you have fun! Our group's youngest member was 10, and our oldest member was 68.”

Erin J. · Rafting, ages 10 to 68

“The experience was perfect for my sister's 4 kids – with just enough whitewater to splash the kids, but no real danger of them falling in!”

Scenic Float: your questions

Will we get wet on the Scenic Float?

Probably not much. The guide keeps to the calm water, but a splash is always possible, so dress for it.

Do we have to paddle?

No. Your guide rows the whole way; you just sit back and enjoy it.

How young can kids be?

The Scenic Float is our river trip for little ones. The age groups and their prices show when you pick a date.

Can someone who can't manage the hill come along?

Yes. Tell us when you book and we'll start your group from an easier put-in.

Is it the same river as the whitewater trips?

Yes, the same stretch of the Yellowstone, on a calmer line through it. In July and August, when the water drops, it's very close to the 8-Mile.

Can we bring snacks?

Yes. You're welcome to bring a drink or a snack to enjoy along the way.
